Gutter cleaning costs in Maryland
Gutter cleaning is priced on height, on how much gutter there is, and on how hard it is to stand where the work happens. Everything else is noise. This page gives the real figures for Frederick County and the surrounding area, and explains the one situation where cleaning will not fix the problem you called about.
Quick answer
Gutter cleaning in Maryland costs $155 to $295 for a single-storey house and $225 to $425 for a two-storey. Three-storey elevations and anything needing scaffolding are quoted after a look. Clearing a blocked downspout is included; a buried drain line cleared or camera-checked is $145 to $385. Most houses in Frederick County need it twice a year, in late spring and again in late November.
The numbers
Almost no contractor site in this market publishes a number, which is exactly why the question has so much search demand and so little honest supply. These are the ranges we price to in Maryland, with the reason each one is a range and not a price.
Typical in Maryland
Two-storey house, gutters cleared and flushed
$225 – $425
$155 – $295
Ranch and rambler elevations where the whole run is reachable from a ladder on level ground. Length of run moves it within the band.
$225 – $425
The common Frederick County case. Rear elevations on a sloping lot read as taller than the front and are priced on the hardest side.
Quoted on site
Scaffolding, a steep drop behind the house, or a roof that cannot be walked. We would rather look than guess, and the figure is agreed before we come out.
Included
Part of a cleaning, not an extra. A gutter that is clear into a blocked downspout has not been cleaned.
$145 – $385
Where the downspout disappears into the ground. Roots and silt are the usual finding, and the camera is what distinguishes a blockage from a collapsed line.
+$85 – $240
Screen and surface-tension types have to come off to clean properly. Good micro-mesh usually does not, which is part of what it is worth.
$185 – $350
Found during a cleaning more often than any other fault. The same figure the gutter repair pages carry, and it is quoted before the work rather than added after.
$225 – $650
A sagging run holds water and will overflow however clean it is. Priced by the length that needs taking back to the fascia.
+$95 – $260
Cosmetic, and genuinely optional. Tiger striping on the fascia side of aluminium does not come off with a cleaning alone.
Included
Bagged and taken. Leaf litter is not left in a pile behind the garage.
Included
Pictures of the fault, not a verbal account of it. This is how a cleaning becomes useful rather than just clean.

Twice a year for most of Frederick County. Once in late spring, after the oak catkins and the maple seed have come down and before summer storms, and once in late November, by which point the oaks have finished — they drop later than most people expect, often into December.
A house on an open lot with no mature trees overhanging the roof can reasonably go to once a year. A house under tulip poplars or sited below a treeline may want three visits, with one of them in early winter once the last of the leaf is down.
The schedule is driven by what is above the roof, not by the calendar or by a service plan. If a cleaning in April finds almost nothing, that is useful information and it should change the plan rather than be repeated for its own sake.
Overflow is often a sizing or a pitch problem rather than a debris problem, and that distinction is worth understanding before paying for repeat cleanings that do not work.
Five-inch gutter on a large or steep roof will overflow in a heavy summer storm when it is perfectly clean, because the volume arriving exceeds what the trough and the downspout can carry. A six-inch gutter holds roughly forty percent more water and takes a three-by-four downspout, and sizing is worked out from roof area and pitch rather than from what was there before.
The same is true of pitch. A run that has lost its fall holds standing water, and standing water finds the seams. No amount of cleaning corrects it. Where we find either, the cleaning is still worth doing, but the report will say plainly that the overflow has a different cause and what the fix costs.
A repair quote that quietly includes a cleaning hides both numbers. If a seam needs resealing at $185 to $350 and the run also needs clearing, those are two pieces of work and they appear as two lines.
It also runs the other way. We are not going to reseal a joint and leave the run full of debris, because the seal will not be assessable and the water will not be going anywhere. Where both are needed, both are quoted, and the homeowner decides whether to do one or the other.
Clear pricing on small work is how larger work gets trusted later. A cleaning is often the first job a household gives us, and the written report that comes out of it is the honest basis for anything that follows.
Before you sign anything
Ask every contractor for these in writing. Quotes only compare once they do — and Maryland law requires home improvement work over $500 to be under a written contract anyway.

What moves the number
Usually not because one contractor is expensive. Usually because they are pricing different work. These are the variables that actually move it.
Price follows the hardest side, not the average. A house that reads as two storeys from the street is frequently three at the back on the sloping lots around Frederick, and the rear is where the longest runs and the deepest debris usually are. A walk around the house before quoting is the difference between a figure that holds and one that is revised on the day.
Linear feet of run, the number of downspouts, and how many inside and outside corners the roof makes. A simple rectangle with four downspouts is quick. A roof with dormers, valleys and eight downspouts takes most of a morning on the same house footprint.
Oak and tulip poplar are the two that fill gutters in this county. Oak catkins and maple seed in late spring, then oak leaf drop that runs into December. A house under mature oaks genuinely needs two visits; a house on an open lot does not, and we will say so rather than sell a schedule.
Screens and surface-tension covers have to be lifted to clean under, which adds time. Good micro-mesh keeps the debris on top where rain and a brush move it, and it reduces cleaning to an inspection in most years. Any guard that slides up under the shingle course is a roofing problem waiting to happen, whatever it does for the gutter.
A cleaning is the only time anyone looks closely at a gutter, and it is where failed seams, loose hangers, rotten fascia and a lost pitch are discovered. Those are quoted as their own lines, before the work, with a photograph. They are the reason a cleaning has value beyond the debris.

Not covered here? Call and ask — you’ll get a real answer, not a “depends on the job”.
Between $225 and $425, depending on how much gutter there is, how many downspouts and corners the roof makes, and how much is in there. A single-storey house runs $155 to $295. Three-storey elevations and anything needing scaffolding are quoted after a look.
No. Clearing and flushing the downspout runs is part of a cleaning, because a trough emptied into a blocked downspout has not been cleaned. Buried drain lines that run underground are the one exception, at $145 to $385 to clear or camera-check.
Twice a year for most houses here: late spring after the oak catkins and maple seed, and late November once the oaks have finished dropping. An open lot with no overhanging trees can usually manage once a year.
Almost always sizing or pitch. Five-inch gutter on a large or steep roof overflows in a heavy storm when it is spotless, and a run that has lost its fall holds water however clean it is. A six-inch gutter with a three-by-four downspout holds around forty percent more, and sizing is calculated from roof area and pitch.
No, but good micro-mesh reduces it to an inspection in most years, which is worth real money under mature oaks. Screens and surface-tension covers still have to be lifted to clean under. Avoid any guard that slides up beneath the shingle course.
