Pavers in Frederick & Central MD

Paver walkways and paths

A front path is the most-walked surface on the property and the first thing a visitor stands on. Narrow runs are easy to build badly, because a base shortcut on a three-foot path shows up within a year.

Quick answer

What does a paver walkway cost in Maryland?

A straight paver path three to four feet wide runs $24 – $45 per square foot installed, a curved path $30 – $55, and natural stone $40 – $70. The per-square-foot rate is higher than a patio because a narrow run is almost all edge and cut: two restraint lines instead of one, a border on both sides, and far more cutting per square foot of finished surface. The total is still much smaller, because the area is.

The work

What paver walkway actually involves.

Walkways get treated as the small job on a hardscape quote and they are the one people use most. A front path takes every delivery, every visitor and every trip to the bin, and it is walked on in the dark more often than any patio. That changes what matters about it. On a patio an eighth of an inch of unevenness is invisible; on a path it is something somebody catches a toe on, and a path with a trip lip in it is a defect however good the stonework looks.

Narrow runs are also less forgiving structurally than wide ones. A path is a thin ribbon of pavers with edge restraint on both sides and very little field to hold itself together, so it relies more heavily on its base than a patio does, and it sits in the part of the garden that gets the most water — along the house, under the downspouts, across the lawn that holds a puddle. A shortcut in the base of a three-foot path shows up fast.

The decisions worth making before anybody digs are width, route and what runs underneath. Width follows use: a path two people walk side by side on is a different thing from a utility run to a shed. Route follows where people actually walk, which is not always where the existing path is. And anything that wants to be under the path — lighting conduit, an irrigation line, a sleeve for later — goes in first, because retrofitting it means lifting what we just built.

What paver walkway costs in Maryland

Maryland paver walkway installation, 2026. Narrow runs carry more edge and cut work per square foot than a patio does, so the per-foot rate is higher than the patio band even though the total is smaller. Access and spoil removal move these.

Straight paver walkway, 3–4 ft wide
$24 – $45 per square foot
Curved or radius path
$30 – $55 per square foot
Natural stone path
$40 – $70 per square foot
Landing at a door
$650 – $1,800
Removing an existing path
$4 – $9 per square foot
Lighting conduit or sleeve under the base
$6 – $14 per linear foot

Ranges, not quotes. Real numbers come from a walkthrough — access, condition, height and finish level move a price more than square footage does. Estimates are free and in writing.

What’s included

Everything the paver walkway scope actually covers.

Written into the estimate, not assumed. If something on your job is not on this list, it gets priced and named before anyone starts.

Width set to how it is used

01

A main front path wants enough width for two people to pass and for furniture to be carried in, and a garden or utility run can be narrower. We would rather talk this through than default to whatever the old path was, because an undersized front walk is the single most common regret we hear about and widening it afterwards means rebuilding both edges.

Base built for a narrow run

02

A thin ribbon of pavers has far less field to lock itself together than a patio does, so it depends on its base more, not less. Full-depth excavation, stone compacted in lifts, separation from the subsoil, and restraint on both edges rather than one. A path built on a scraped-back three inches of stone is the fastest-failing hardscape there is.

No trip lips, anywhere

03

Consistency underfoot is the thing we check hardest on a walkway. Units set to a true plane, joints tight, no proud corners, and a flush transition where the path meets a step, a threshold, a driveway or a lawn. Where a path has to change level we build a step rather than letting the grade do it gradually, because a shallow unannounced rise is what people fall on.

Curves, radii and cuts that land well

04

A curved path is cut work, and good cut work is why one curve looks deliberate and another looks approximate. We set the radius on the ground with the client looking at it rather than off a plan, keep the border running cleanly through the bend, and put the cuts where the eye does not land first.

Landings, steps and the door

05

The place a path meets a house is where it either works or does not. A landing at the door big enough to stand on with a bag in each hand while the door opens, risers consistent with each other, and a threshold transition that sheds water away from the sill rather than towards it.

Conduit and sleeves in first

06

Low-voltage lighting cable, an irrigation line, a spare sleeve for whatever comes later — all of it goes under the base while the trench is open. It costs very little during the build and it is the difference between adding path lighting in an afternoon in three years and lifting a finished walkway to do it.

Paver walkway questions

Not covered here? Call and ask — you’ll get a real answer, not a “depends on the job”.

Wide enough for two people to walk side by side and for a sofa to be carried in, which in practice means noticeably wider than most existing paths in older developments. A main front walk that feels generous reads as part of the house; one that forces people into single file reads as an afterthought, and it is the thing homeowners most often wish they had sized up. Secondary garden and utility runs can be narrower without any of that mattering.

Occasionally, but it is a worse idea on a path than on a patio. Adding a bedding course and pavers on top raises the walking surface by two or three inches, which has to be absorbed somewhere — usually at the door threshold, where it is least welcome, or at the lawn edge, where it creates the trip lip we work hardest to avoid. Most of the time the old walk comes out, at $4 – $9 per square foot, and the new path is built at the right height.

Sloped, slightly, and across rather than along where possible. A path with a gentle cross-fall sheds water to one side and dries; a dead-level path holds a film of water that freezes in winter and grows algae in summer, both of which make it slippery. Where a path has to climb, we build the rise as steps with consistent risers rather than as a long ramp, because inconsistent risers are what people trip on.
