Siding in Frederick & Central MD
Vinyl gets dismissed as the cheap option, and the cheap vinyl deserves it. The difference between a wall that still looks right in year fifteen and one that looks tired in year five is gauge, nailing and trim — not brand.
Quick answer
Standard .042 gauge vinyl is $4 to $7 per square foot of wall area installed in Frederick County, including tearing off and hauling away what is there now. A premium .046 panel or a dutch lap profile runs $5.50 to $9. For a typical two thousand square foot house that is $14,500 to $25,000. What moves it is the amount of trim — a house with a lot of windows, dormers and corners has far more linear feet of channel work than a plain box of the same area.
The work
Vinyl is on more Maryland houses than everything else combined, and for sound reasons: it never needs painting, it costs about half what fibre cement costs installed, and a modern panel holds its colour far better than the chalky stuff from the nineties gave it a reputation for. What it asks in return is that it be hung correctly, because vinyl is the one cladding that actively moves.
A twelve-foot panel grows and shrinks around half an inch between a January morning and a July afternoon in Frederick. Every detail of the system exists to allow that: the nailing slots, the sixteenth of an inch of play left under each nail head, the gap at every J-channel and corner post, the way panels interlock rather than butt. Hang it tight and you get the waves that make people say vinyl looks cheap. Hang it loose and correct and it lies flat for decades.
The specification conversation is short and worth having. Gauge — the actual thickness of the panel — is the single biggest driver of how it looks on the wall and how it survives a hailstorm; we work in .042 and up rather than the builder-grade .040 you will find in a lowest-bid quote. Profile is aesthetic: double-four and double-five clapboard read as traditional, dutch lap throws a stronger shadow line, and a beaded profile suits older Frederick houses. We will show you the panels rather than the brochure.
Priced on wall area including tear-off and disposal. The gauge and the amount of trim move the number far more than the colour does.
Ranges, not quotes. Real numbers come from a walkthrough — access, condition, height and finish level move a price more than square footage does. Estimates are free and in writing.

What’s included
Written into the estimate, not assumed. If something on your job is not on this list, it gets priced and named before anyone starts.
Panel thickness, profile and colour picked from samples held against your house in daylight, not from a catalogue. Darker colours take more heat and need the better gauge to stay flat.
The first course sets every course above it. Levelled with a laser around the whole building rather than followed off a foundation that has settled, because a starter strip out by a quarter inch is out by a quarter inch at the eaves too.
Corrosion-resistant nails in the centre of each slot, driven to leave about a sixteenth of an inch of play, at the manufacturer spacing. Panels locked into the course below and not stretched to reach.
Outside corner posts, inside corners, J-channel at windows and doors, and utility trim under sills — all with the expansion gaps the system expects, which is where most of the visible quality lives.
The small slots along the bottom of each panel are the drainage. They stay open. We do not caulk the bottom edge of a lap course, whatever the previous contractor did.
Hose bibs, lights, dryer vents and meter bases get a mounting block rather than a hole and a bead of sealant, so the panel can still move and the penetration still sheds water.

Straight answers

We do not go below .042, and .046 is worth the difference on any elevation that takes afternoon sun or faces the weather. Gauge is the panel thickness, and it decides three things: how flat the wall reads in raking light, how much the panel oil-cans in heat, and whether a hailstone cracks it or bounces off. Builder-grade .040 is what a lowest-bid quote is almost always built on, and it is the first thing to ask a competing contractor to put in writing.
Modern vinyl fades far less than the nineties material that gave it the reputation, because the colour runs through the panel and the formulations now carry proper UV packages. Expect a slight lightening in the first two or three years and then stability. Dark colours and deep reds move the most, which is worth knowing before you pick one for a south-facing wall — we will say so at the estimate rather than after.
It can, with a vinyl-safe acrylic in a colour no darker than the original, and we would usually talk you out of it. Paint on vinyl is a maintenance commitment on a material chosen to avoid maintenance, and going darker makes the panel absorb more heat than it was designed for, which warps it. If the colour is the problem, replacing the panels usually costs less over ten years than painting them twice.
