Concrete in Frederick & Central MD
Most concrete repair questions are really one question: is this slab still sound underneath? The answer decides whether a repair lasts or just postpones things.
Quick answer
The test is whether the slab still has support underneath. If it is cracked but the two sides are level and nothing is moving, repair and resurfacing at $4 to $9 per square foot is good value against $8 to $15 plus $3 to $8 of tear-out for replacement. If panels have dropped, there is vertical offset at the cracks, or the subgrade has washed out, an overlay will crack in the same places within a couple of seasons and replacement is the cheaper answer over ten years. We will tell you which one you have.
The work
The useful thing a contractor can do on a concrete repair call is diagnose rather than quote. A crack is information, and what it tells you depends on where it is, how wide, whether the two sides are at the same level, and whether it has been moving. A hairline crack along a control joint is the slab doing exactly what it was designed to do. A crack across a panel with a quarter inch of vertical offset is a slab that has lost support underneath, and no amount of surface work changes that.
Surface damage is a separate question. Spalling — where the top layer flakes away and leaves aggregate showing — is usually a finishing or curing problem from when the slab was poured, made visible years later by freeze-thaw and de-icing salt. It is cosmetic until it is deep, and a resurfacing overlay is a genuinely good answer on a slab that is structurally fine. On a slab that is moving, an overlay cracks in the same places within a couple of seasons.
So this page is partly about saying no. We will resurface a sound slab, route and seal cracks that are stable, and replace individual panels where that is the sensible unit. We do not do slab jacking or polyurethane void filling, and where a slab has lost its support we will say that the answer is replacement rather than take money for an overlay that will fail. The blog post on cracking and spalling goes through how to read what you are looking at.
Frederick-area concrete repair and resurfacing, 2026. Repair is priced by the item rather than by area. Where replacement is the honest answer, the tear-out and new-pour figures from our concrete page apply instead.
Ranges, not quotes. Real numbers come from a walkthrough — access, condition, height and finish level move a price more than square footage does. Estimates are free and in writing.

What’s included
Written into the estimate, not assumed. If something on your job is not on this list, it gets priced and named before anyone starts.
What kind of crack, where it runs relative to the joints, whether there is vertical offset, and whether the cause is still active. A downspout washing out the subgrade along one edge is a different problem from shrinkage, and the two need different answers. We look for the cause rather than pricing the symptom.
Stable cracks cut out to a proper profile, cleaned, and filled with a flexible sealant that can accommodate movement, rather than having a rigid filler smeared across the top. A smeared repair looks fixed for a season and then reopens alongside itself, which is worse than it was before.
Failed surface and loose edges taken back to concrete that is actually sound, keyed properly, and repaired with a material compatible with what is there. The common failure is patching onto a weak surface, where the patch stays bonded to a layer that was already letting go.
An overlay on a slab that is structurally sound and reasonably flat, which can give a tired driveway or patio another long stretch of life for well under the cost of replacement. We say honestly when a slab is a good candidate and when it is not, because an overlay on a moving slab telegraphs every crack within two winters.
Where damage is confined, saw-cutting out the affected panel, correcting the subgrade underneath, and pouring a new one to the existing joint lines. New concrete beside forty-year-old concrete will not match in colour and we will tell you that before we start rather than after.
Where water is the reason — a downspout discharging onto the slab edge, grade falling toward the house, a low spot that holds a pond — it gets addressed in the same visit. Repairing concrete and leaving the water that destroyed it is how a contractor gets to do the same job twice.

Straight answers
Not covered here? Call and ask — you’ll get a real answer, not a “depends on the job”.
That is spalling, and it almost always traces back to how the slab was finished and cured rather than to anything you have done. A surface that lost its water too fast, or was trowelled while bleed water was still on it, ends up with a weak top layer, and freeze-thaw plus de-icing salt eventually lift it off. It is cosmetic while it is shallow. A resurfacing overlay is the usual fix on a slab that is otherwise sound — the blog post on this site goes through how to tell how deep it has gone.
Not as a service we offer. Slab jacking and polyurethane void filling are specialist work with specialist equipment and we would rather refer you than do it badly. What we can do is tell you whether the void is the real problem, what caused it — usually water moving fine material out from under the slab — and whether fixing the drainage and replacing the affected panels is a better long-term answer for your situation than lifting a slab back over a cause that is still active.
No, and anybody who says otherwise is setting you up for a disappointing day. New concrete beside concrete that has weathered for decades differs in colour and texture, and it will narrow over years without ever disappearing. On a driveway or a path most people stop seeing it. On a patio you sit on every evening it may matter enough to resurface the whole area instead, which is a conversation worth having before the work rather than after.
Same crew, same visit
Most concrete jobs are two or three of these at once, which is why they are priced and scheduled together rather than as separate call-outs.
