Concrete in Frederick & Central MD
Replacement is the chance to fix what made the last slab fail. Taking the old one out and pouring the same mistake back is the commonest waste of money in this trade.
Quick answer
Tear-out is $3 to $8 per square foot and the new pour is $8 to $15 for plain flatwork or $8 to $18 for a driveway, so a full replacement generally lands between $11 and $26 per square foot before base correction. Clay subgrade work adds $2 to $5, and restricted access that forces hand demolition can add $2 to $6 to the removal. A site visit replaces all of that with one number.
The work
Tearing out concrete is the least glamorous and most frequently underestimated part of a hardscape job. It is loud, it is heavy, and the cost is driven almost entirely by things you cannot see on a photograph: how thick the old slab is, whether it has reinforcement mesh in it, whether a machine can reach it or everything has to come out by hand and barrow through a side gate. That is why our parent page prices it separately at $3 to $8 per square foot rather than folding it into a rate.
The first thing that happens is a utility locate, and it is not a formality. Maryland has a free one-call service and using it before breaking ground is both the law and simple self-interest — gas, water, electric and communication lines run under driveways and along the side of houses at depths that nobody can guess from the surface. We make the call and wait for the marks, and no amount of schedule pressure changes that.
The part that actually matters for the money, though, is what happens between taking the old slab out and pouring the new one. A slab that failed, failed for a reason. If the subgrade was never built for clay, if a downspout has been washing fines out from under one edge for fifteen years, if the grade sends water toward the house — pouring a new slab onto the same conditions buys you a nicer-looking version of the same problem. Replacement is the one chance to correct it with the ground open, and we price that correction in rather than discovering it on the day.

What’s included
Written into the estimate, not assumed. If something on your job is not on this list, it gets priced and named before anyone starts.
Maryland's free one-call locate requested and the marks in place before any demolition starts, and hand digging where a line is marked close. Driveways and side paths are exactly where services run, and the depth is never what anyone expects. This is not negotiable against a schedule.
Where only part of a slab is coming out, a saw cut gives a straight full-depth edge for the new pour to meet rather than a ragged break that has to be filled and always shows. Clean lines also mean the panel you keep does not get cracked by the demolition next to it.
Lawns, beds, kerbs and existing paths protected along the route the machine and the spoil take. Most of the damage people remember from a concrete job was not done to the thing being replaced, and it is avoidable with plywood, boards and some thought about the route before day one.
Broken concrete hauled away and disposed of or recycled rather than left in a pile behind the garage for a fortnight. Where clean broken concrete can legitimately be reused as base on the same job we will say so, because it saves you haulage and material both.
Subgrade rebuilt for clay where that is the problem, grade corrected so water leaves, downspout discharge taken past the new slab, and any washed-out area under the old concrete made good. This is the whole value of replacing rather than overlaying and it is the step a cheap quote leaves out.
The replacement set out with its own panel layout and joint plan rather than copying the lines of a slab that cracked, and finished, cured and protected properly. If the old joints were in the wrong places, repeating them repeats the cracking.

Straight answers
Not covered here? Call and ask — you’ll get a real answer, not a “depends on the job”.
Yes, and we do it rather than leaving it to you. Maryland operates a free one-call locating service and the marks have to be in place before anything is broken out. Gas, water, electric and communications lines run under driveways and along the sides of houses, often shallower than anyone would guess, and the consequences of guessing range from an expensive repair to a serious one. No schedule is worth skipping it.
Usually, yes, and panels are the natural unit. We saw-cut a straight full-depth boundary, take out the affected sections, correct whatever is underneath, and pour back to the existing joint lines. The new concrete will be a different colour from its weathered neighbours and that difference narrows over years without going away. On a driveway most people find that an easy trade for not paying to replace sound concrete.
It is hauled away and disposed of or recycled, not left in a heap on the lawn. Where the broken material is clean and the job genuinely needs base, we will tell you if some of it can be crushed and reused on site, which saves both haulage and imported stone. What we will not do is use broken slab as fill under a new pour where it is not the right material, because large voids between chunks are exactly what makes a new slab settle.
Same crew, same visit
Most concrete jobs are two or three of these at once, which is why they are priced and scheduled together rather than as separate call-outs.
