Finish Carpentry in Frederick & Central MD
Panelling is set out, not installed. Where the battens land decides whether a wall looks designed or looks like it ran out of space.
Quick answer
Wainscoting and accent walls run $12 to $30 per square foot of wall covered, with style driving most of the range — board and batten in painted MDF at $12 to $20 and shaker panel wainscoting at $22 to $38. A chair rail on its own is $6 to $14 per linear foot. A typical ten by eight foot feature wall comes to roughly $950 to $2,400 depending on the style.
The work
Panelled walls are the most visible trim carpentry in a house and almost all of the quality is in the setting out. A board and batten wall where the battens are evenly spaced and land sensibly at the corners, the door and the window looks considered. The same wall built by starting at one end and spacing at a round number until the last bay comes out narrow looks like exactly that, and no amount of good cutting rescues it.
So the first thing that happens is arithmetic on paper. The run is measured, the obstacles are plotted — outlets, switches, a radiator, the door casing, a window — and the spacing is adjusted so the bays are equal and the awkward items fall where they look intentional. Where a wall genuinely cannot be divided evenly, the honest move is to break it at a corner or a feature rather than hiding a narrow bay behind a sofa and hoping the sofa never moves.
The three common styles behave differently and are worth distinguishing. Board and batten is vertical battens over a flat field, usually the cheapest and the most forgiving on an uneven wall. Shaker panel is stiles and rails forming recessed panels, more work and more formal. Picture-frame panelling applies mouldings directly to the existing wall, which is the least material and the most dependent on the wall being flat, because the frame sits on whatever is there. Height matters as much as style — a chair-rail height band and a two-thirds-height panelled wall are different rooms.
Maryland trim work, installed, priced by the square foot of wall covered. Material grade and style move these ranges more than anything else — board and batten at the low end, shaker panel at the top.
Ranges, not quotes. Real numbers come from a walkthrough — access, condition, height and finish level move a price more than square footage does. Estimates are free and in writing.

What’s included
Written into the estimate, not assumed. If something on your job is not on this list, it gets priced and named before anyone starts.
The wall measured, obstacles plotted and the bay spacing calculated so panels are equal and features land deliberately. You see the layout, with dimensions, before we start. This is the step that decides whether the finished wall looks designed.
Cover plates and boxes worked into the layout rather than fought at the end — a batten clipping the edge of an outlet is the commonest tell of a wall set out by eye. Where a box needs extending forward to sit flush with the new thickness, we fit an extension ring rather than leaving a plate floating.
Board and batten, shaker panel or picture frame, at chair-rail, two-thirds or full height — recommended against the room's proportions and your budget. The three differ substantially in labour, and the cheapest is not always the one that suits the house.
The wall checked for flatness, old trim removed, and anything that would telegraph through a flat panel field made good. Picture-frame panelling in particular sits directly on the existing surface, so a wavy wall shows up inside every frame.
The top cap, chair rail and existing or new baseboard detailed as one assembly, with the junctions resolved rather than butted. Panelling that ignores the baseboard it meets looks added on, which is the thing that makes a good idea read as a weekend project.
Every joint filled and caulked, panel fields sanded, and the wall handed over ready for paint — or painted by us in the same visit. Panelling has far more linear feet of caulk than any other trim and it genuinely benefits from being painted by whoever caulked it.

Chair-rail height, around 32 to 36 inches, is the traditional answer and suits dining rooms and hallways. Two-thirds height — roughly 54 to 60 inches in an eight-foot room — reads more contemporary and is what most of the board and batten we fit comes out at. Full height is a statement and works best in a small room like a powder room. We will mark a height on the wall with tape before committing.
Board and batten is vertical battens applied over a flat field, usually MDF, and it is the most forgiving on an uneven wall as well as the cheapest. Shaker panelling is a frame of stiles and rails forming recessed panels — more material, more joints, more formal, and roughly double the labour. Both are painted the same colour in most installations and look quite different.
Yes, and that is how most of it is fitted. The wall needs to be sound and reasonably flat — picture-frame panelling especially, because the mouldings sit directly on the existing surface and a wavy wall shows inside every frame. Board and batten over a flat field panel is the most tolerant option where the wall is less than perfect, because the field covers what is behind it.
