Floor & Deck Coatings in Frederick & Central MD
A seamless walkable membrane with grip in it, over a deck that has been made ready to receive one.
Quick answer
No, and that is one of the commonest misunderstandings about this product. A coating needs a continuous rigid substrate, and individual deck boards move independently and have gaps between them. The boards come off and plywood sheathing goes down, or the deck stays a board deck. Where somebody has coated over boards it cracks along every joint within a season.
The work
Deck coating covers the walkable waterproof systems that go over elevated decks, roof decks and shared walkways: a base layer, reinforcement where movement is expected, aggregate broadcast for grip, and a wear coat over the top. The appeal is that it is seamless. There are no boards, no joints and no fasteners through it, which removes the places water normally gets through a deck surface.
The substrate decides most of the specification. A concrete deck is straightforward and takes the same grinding-based preparation as any slab. A plywood deck is not: the sheathing has to be sound, properly fastened, dry, and stiff enough not to deflect under load, because a membrane over a springy deck cracks along the joints. Where the sheathing is soft or the fastening is inadequate it gets replaced first, and we would rather find that at the estimate than halfway through.
Slip resistance is a specification decision rather than a side effect, and it is one we will raise with you. A smooth coated deck in the rain is genuinely slippery, and an elevated one with people on it is a hazard. Aggregate broadcast into the system gives grip in proportion to how much goes in — more is safer and less comfortable barefoot — so we would rather ask how the deck gets used than apply the glossiest option.
Deck figures are national ranges — no Maryland residential deck-coating contractor publishes pricing, and presenting a national number as a local one is not something we are prepared to do. Substrate repair is quoted separately once the deck is assessed.
Ranges, not quotes. Real numbers come from a walkthrough — access, condition, height and finish level move a price more than square footage does. Estimates are free and in writing.

Deck coating and waterproofing
What’s included
Written into the estimate, not assumed. If something on your job is not on this list, it gets priced and named before anyone starts.
Plywood sheathing checked for soundness, moisture, fastening and deflection, and replaced where it falls short. A membrane is only as stable as what it is bonded to, and a deck that moves underfoot will split one.
A continuous system with no joints, laps or fasteners through the wearing surface, dressed up the walls and into every edge. The absence of joints is the main thing this buys you over a board deck.
Fabric or fleece embedded over sheet joints, cracks and changes of plane so the system can take movement. This is where a cheap deck coating fails and the extra layer costs very little.
Aggregate broadcast to a grip level chosen with you, weighed against bare feet and ease of cleaning. We will tell you what the trade-off is rather than defaulting to the surface that photographs best.
The membrane dressed over and under the deck edge with a proper drip detail, so water leaves the deck rather than tracking back under it. An edge stopped short wicks water into the fascia and framing behind.
Treads, risers and landings coated as part of the same system with extra aggregate on the treads, because stairs are where a slippery coated deck causes actual injuries rather than just complaints.

Anything from a light texture you would barely notice to a coarse non-slip surface closer to a commercial walkway. More aggregate means better wet traction and a surface that is less pleasant barefoot and slightly harder to sweep. For a family deck we would usually suggest a moderate broadcast with extra on the stairs, which is where falls happen.
A reasonably wide range of solid colours and a selection of flake blends, in satin or low-gloss. Lighter colours run cooler underfoot in a Maryland August, which matters more on a deck than people expect. What a coating will not do is imitate timber convincingly, so if a wood look is the priority this is the wrong product and we will say so.
Typically light foot traffic within 24 hours of the final coat and furniture back after about three days, though it depends on the system and the weather. Cool, damp Maryland spring conditions slow it down. We will give you a date rather than a range, and we would rather lose a day to the forecast than rush a cure.
Same crew, same visit
Most floor & deck coatings jobs are two or three of these at once, which is why they are priced and scheduled together rather than as separate call-outs.
