Siding in Frederick & Central MD

Fibre cement siding

Fibre cement is the cladding that behaves like a building material rather than a product. It does not soften in July, does not go brittle in January, and holds a paint line for twelve to fifteen years.

Quick answer

How much does fibre cement siding cost in Maryland?

Primed and site-painted fibre cement runs $7.25 to $12.50 per square foot of wall area installed in Frederick County. Factory-finished board, which arrives with a baked colour and its own finish warranty, is $9 to $15. For a typical two thousand square foot house that is about $21,000 to $34,000. It is roughly fifty to seventy per cent more than vinyl, and it lasts two to three times as long, which is the trade you are actually making.

The work

What fibre cement actually involves.

Fibre cement is cement, sand and cellulose fibre pressed into a board about five sixteenths of an inch thick. That makes it roughly two and a half times the weight of vinyl and gives it the one quality vinyl cannot buy: it does not care about temperature. No oil-canning in a heatwave, no cracking when a ladder taps it on a cold morning, and enough mass that it reads as a solid wall rather than a skin. On Frederick County houses with good architectural bones it is usually the right answer.

It is also unforgiving of bad installation in a way vinyl is not. The boards are blind-nailed through the upper edge at a specified gauge, so each course covers the fastening of the one below; face-nailing is permitted in some assemblies and visible forever. Butt joints need a flashing tab behind them, not caulk. The bottom course is held clear of grade and the board edges stay off masonry, because fibre cement will wick water through a cut edge if you let it sit in it.

Finish is a real decision. Factory-finished boards arrive with a baked colour and a long finish warranty and cost more up front; site-painted boards go on primed and get two coats of acrylic, which costs less and lets you pick any colour you like. We price both. One caution worth stating plainly: cutting fibre cement makes respirable silica dust, so it gets cut with shears or a dust-collecting blade, outside, with the extraction actually connected.

What’s included

Everything the fibre cement scope actually covers.

Written into the estimate, not assumed. If something on your job is not on this list, it gets priced and named before anyone starts.

Layout before the first board

01

Course layout set off the window heads and the soffit so the exposure lands cleanly at openings instead of leaving a two-inch rip under the eaves. On fibre cement this is planning, not trimming — you cannot stretch a course.

Blind nailing at the specified gauge

02

Fasteners through the nailing zone into studs or solid sheathing at the published spacing, so each course hides the one below. Where face nailing is unavoidable the heads are set, filled and painted.

Joint flashing

03

A flashing tab behind every butt joint, joints staggered between courses, and no reliance on sealant to keep water out of an end grain. This is the detail that decides whether the wall is sound in year twenty.

Clearances held

04

The bottom course kept clear of grade and of decks, roofs and masonry, with a drip edge at the starter. Fibre cement sitting in standing water wicks through the cut edge and swells.

Factory or site finish

05

Pre-finished boards with their own colour warranty, or primed boards with two coats of exterior acrylic in whatever colour you want. Both priced so you can compare them against how long you plan to own the house.

Silica dust controlled

06

Shears or a dust-collecting saw with extraction connected, cutting done outside and away from open windows. Not an optional nicety — it is the one genuine health hazard in the trade.

Fibre cement questions

HardiePlank is James Hardie's brand of fibre cement lap siding, and it is the one most people mean when they say the word. There are other manufacturers and the installation principles are the same across them: blind nail to gauge, flash the butt joints, hold the clearances. We install what you want and will tell you plainly where the brands genuinely differ, which is mostly in finish warranty and the range of factory colours.

Site-painted board needs repainting roughly every twelve to fifteen years in this climate, which is two to three times longer than wood. Factory-finished board carries a finish warranty in the fifteen-year range and typically goes longer. Either way it is a repaint, not a replacement — the board underneath is still a cement board, and that is the point of it.

No, and that is one of the clearer differences from vinyl. Fibre cement is heavy and it is nailed into studs or solid sheathing to a specified schedule, so it needs the wall bare, flat and sound underneath. The existing cladding comes off, the sheathing gets inspected, and new wrap and flashing go on. If a quote offers fibre cement over existing siding, that is the question to ask about.
