A door that has to be leaned on to latch was hung out of plumb. Everything else about door hanging follows from that.
Quick answer
Hanging a prehung door is typically $180 to $420 per opening in labour and hanging a slab into an existing jamb $150 to $350. A handle and latch set fitted is $45 to $110, a pocket or bypass door $350 to $850, and rehanging or adjusting a door that already exists $95 to $240. The door and hardware themselves sit on top of these figures and range widely.
The work
Hanging a door well is almost entirely about the jamb rather than the door. If the hinge jamb is plumb and straight, the door swings where you leave it, the reveal is even on all three sides, and the latch finds the strike without being helped. If the hinge jamb is twisted or out of plumb, the door swings itself open or closed, the gap tapers, and the latch needs a shove — and no amount of adjusting the strike plate afterwards really fixes it.
Which route makes sense depends on what is there. A prehung unit — door, jamb and casing as one assembly — is the better answer where the existing jamb is damaged, out of square or the wrong size, and it is what goes into new openings. Hanging a slab into a sound existing jamb is less disruptive and keeps original casing in place, which matters in an older house with trim worth keeping, but it only works if the jamb is genuinely straight and the hinge positions can be reused or re-gained cleanly.
Then there is hardware, which is where a good installation gets quietly undone. Latches that bind, handles fitted at inconsistent heights across a floor, hinges mortised too deep so the door sits proud, and strike plates chiselled out and then packed with filler are all common. We fit hardware to a consistent height, mortise to the right depth, and check every door actually latches and stays where it is put before leaving — including after the carpet goes down, because flooring thickness is the thing that most often turns a good door into a sticking one.
Maryland interior door work, installed. Door and hardware cost sits on top of these labour figures and varies enormously by style and finish.
Ranges, not quotes. Real numbers come from a walkthrough — access, condition, height and finish level move a price more than square footage does. Estimates are free and in writing.

What’s included
Written into the estimate, not assumed. If something on your job is not on this list, it gets priced and named before anyone starts.
The hinge jamb shimmed plumb and straight along its length before anything is fixed off permanently. This is the step that decides whether the door swings true, and it is the step that gets skipped when doors are hung by the hour.
A prehung unit where the existing jamb is damaged, out of square or the wrong depth; a slab hung into the existing jamb where the jamb is sound and the original casing is worth keeping. We will say which your opening wants rather than defaulting to whichever is quicker.
A consistent gap along the top and both sides, set rather than accepted. An even reveal is the visual signature of a door hung properly, and an uneven one is noticed by everybody who closes it even if they cannot say why.
Hinge mortises cut to sit the leaf flush — too shallow and the door will not close, too deep and it sits proud and the latch misses. On an existing jamb being reused, old gains filled and recut where the new hinge pattern differs.
Handles and latches fitted at a consistent height across the floor, strike plates positioned so the latch engages cleanly, and every door checked to latch and hold without being pushed or lifted. Privacy sets and passage sets fitted to match your schedule.
Doors undercut for the finished floor height including any underlay, and the clearance checked after flooring goes in. New carpet over an existing door is the single most common cause of a door that suddenly drags, and it is easier to allow for than to fix later.

Straight answers
Not covered here? Call and ask — you’ll get a real answer, not a “depends on the job”.
Prehung is the better answer where the existing jamb is damaged, out of square, or the wrong depth for the wall, and it is what goes into a new opening. Hanging slabs into sound existing jambs is less disruptive, keeps original casing in an older house, and costs a little less — but only works if the jamb is genuinely straight. We will look at the openings and tell you which, opening by opening.
Usually because the hinge jamb is not plumb, which makes the door swing out of its own frame and brings the latch to the strike at an angle. Moving the strike plate masks it briefly and the door then needs a shove. The real fix is resetting the jamb, which is why we shim it plumb before fixing off. The other common cause is a hinge mortised too deep or too shallow.
It can, and it is the commonest reason a door that worked for years suddenly drags. Thick carpet with underlay, or engineered timber over an existing floor, can add half an inch or more. Doors can be taken off and undercut cleanly for $35 to $85 each, and it is far easier to plan for before the flooring goes in than to deal with afterwards.
