Gutters in Frederick & Central MD
Fascia is the board your gutters are screwed to. When it goes soft, nothing you hang on it stays where you put it.
Quick answer
Fascia board replacement runs $18 to $42 a foot in Frederick County and soffit $14 to $32, with access driving most of that spread — a porch run is at the bottom, a three-storey gable at the top. Individual rotten rafter tails are $95 to $285 each. Priming and painting to match existing trim adds $4 to $10 a foot, and we do that in house rather than leaving you bare wood.
The work
Fascia rots from the back. By the time paint is blistering on the face of the board, water has usually been tracking behind the gutter for several seasons, and the wood you can see is the last part to fail. This is why a homeowner who has had a gutter re-secured twice in three years does not have a gutter problem — the hangers are pulling out because there is nothing solid left for them to hold.
So the first thing we establish is why it got wet. Short or missing drip edge is the most common cause in Frederick County, and it is a roofing detail rather than a gutter one: water comes off the shingle edge, misses the gutter entirely, and runs down the face of the board behind the metal. Second is a gutter that has lost pitch and stood full, soaking the back of the fascia every time it rained. Third is ice, which backs water up over the top of the fascia under the shingles. Replacing the board without fixing the cause gets you a new board that rots on the same schedule.
We replace the wood rather than wrapping aluminium over it, which is the shortcut that hides the problem and keeps it wet. Where a soffit is involved, we keep the venting working — blocked soffit vents are a direct cause of the attic heat that makes ice dams, so sealing them up to tidy an edge detail creates a worse problem one roofline higher. With fourteen trades in house, the carpentry, the gutter and the paint all happen on one contract instead of three.
Fascia and soffit price by the foot, and access is the variable that moves it most. A single-storey porch run and a three-storey gable end are very different jobs per foot.
Ranges, not quotes. Real numbers come from a walkthrough — access, condition, height and finish level move a price more than square footage does. Estimates are free and in writing.

Fascia and soffit repair
What’s included
Written into the estimate, not assumed. If something on your job is not on this list, it gets priced and named before anyone starts.
Drip edge, gutter pitch and ice history checked, so the new wood is not put into the same conditions that destroyed the old wood.
Back to sound material and sound framing, scarfed to the existing run so the joint is not sitting in the middle of an elevation. Primed on all six faces before it goes up.
Damaged soffit replaced and net free vent area maintained. Blocking soffit venting to neaten an edge is how a fascia repair becomes an ice dam.
Where water has been in the board for years it has often reached the rafter ends behind it. If there is framing to repair you get a photograph and a price, not a discovery.
Hangers back into solid material at proper centres, with the drip edge detail corrected. Done as one visit with the carpentry rather than booked separately.
Finished to match the existing trim, by the crew that painted it, so a repair does not read as a patch from the street.

Straight answers
Not covered here? Call and ask — you’ll get a real answer, not a “depends on the job”.
We will not, and it is worth knowing why it gets offered. Wrapping is quick and it looks finished immediately, but it traps the moisture against wood that is already failing and it hides the progress from everyone including you. Two or three years later the gutter hangers pull out of something you can no longer inspect. We replace the bad wood and then wrap or paint if you want the low-maintenance finish.
Press it. Sound fascia is hard under a thumb; failing board gives slightly or feels spongy, usually worst directly under a gutter joint or at an inside corner. Other tells are gutter hangers that have been re-secured more than once, paint blistering in a line rather than in patches, and a gutter that has visibly dropped away from the roof edge at one end.
Not necessarily. If the gutters themselves are sound, we take them down carefully, replace the board, and re-hang the same gutters on proper hangers. If they are the original four-inch profile, already leaking at several joints, or have been bent by removal before, doing both at once saves you paying twice for the same ladder work. We will tell you which case you are in before we start.
Same crew, same visit
Most gutters jobs are two or three of these at once, which is why they are priced and scheduled together rather than as separate call-outs.
