Painting in Frederick & Central MD

Paint colour consultation

Colour chosen on your wall, in your light, at the times of day you actually use the room. A two-inch chip under a shop fluorescent tells you almost nothing about what a wall will look like at seven in the evening in February.

Quick answer

Do you charge for a colour consultation?

Not if you go ahead with the painting — it is credited in full against the job, which for most clients means it costs nothing. As a standalone visit it runs $150 to $350, or $400 to $900 for a whole-house interior scheme. Sample boards and on-site patches are $25 to $70 each if you want several options up at once.

The work

What colour consultation actually involves.

Nearly every colour regret starts the same way: a decision made from a small chip, held against a wall, in the wrong light. Paint changes character with the light that falls on it, and a Maryland house gives a colour four or five different personalities over a day — cool northern light in a back bedroom, hard southern light at two in the afternoon, and warm artificial light in the evening when most people are actually sitting in the room. A chip cannot show you any of that, and a phone photograph is worse because the camera corrects the colour you were trying to judge.

So we do it the slow way. Large sample boards or sample patches go on the actual walls, in the actual rooms, and they stay there for a day or two so you can look at them with the morning coffee and again with the lamps on. Undertone is the thing that catches people out — a grey with a green undertone and a grey with a violet undertone look identical on a chip and nothing alike against your floor, your cabinets and your trim.

There is also a practical side that has nothing to do with taste. Sheen by room, how a deep colour behaves over a light one and how many coats that will take, whether a colour will hold up in a south-facing room that fades everything, and where to change colour at a doorway so the transition looks intentional. Those are decisions we make every week, and talking them through before anyone buys paint is the cheapest part of the whole project.

Paint colour consultation

What’s included

Everything the colour consultation scope actually covers.

Written into the estimate, not assumed. If something on your job is not on this list, it gets priced and named before anyone starts.

Samples on your walls, not on a chip

01

Large sample boards or patches applied in the actual rooms and left up for a day or two, so the decision gets made where the paint will live.

Seen in the light you live in

02

Looked at in the morning, in the afternoon and under your evening lighting. A colour that works in all three is a colour that works.

Undertones made obvious

03

Greys, whites and greiges are chosen or rejected on undertone against your floors, cabinets and trim. This is where most colour regret actually comes from.

Sheen decided room by room

04

Flat overhead, eggshell or satin where hands go, semi-gloss on trim. The right sheen matters as much to how a room reads as the colour does.

Coverage and coats explained honestly

05

If your choice means three coats or a tinted primer, we tell you at the consultation and price it then, rather than discovering it halfway through.

Credited against the work

06

If you go ahead with the painting, the consultation comes off the price. We would rather spend the time up front than repaint a room neither of us is happy with.

Colour consultation questions

Not covered here? Call and ask — you’ll get a real answer, not a “depends on the job”.

Because a chip is a two-inch sample under shop lighting and your wall is a hundred square feet under your light, reflecting your floor and your furniture. Scale intensifies colour and surrounding surfaces shift it. This is exactly why we put large samples on the actual wall and leave them up for a day or two before anyone commits.

Fewer than most people expect. A common approach that works well is one main wall colour running through the connected living space, one or two accent colours in rooms you close the door on, a single trim colour throughout and a ceiling white. That gives a house coherence from room to room while still letting individual rooms have a character.

Usually, and we will be honest about the limits. A clean chip off an inconspicuous spot can be matched closely by any good paint counter. What a match cannot do is account for how the existing paint has aged — a fifteen-year-old wall has faded and yellowed, so a perfect match to its original formula will not blend with it. In that case repainting the whole wall is the better answer.
