Plumbing in Frederick & Central MD
A kitchen drain that is slow is almost never the disposal. It is grease in the branch line, and replacing the appliance is the expensive way to find that out.
Quick answer
A disposal replaced runs $320 to $720 including the unit, fitted to the existing mount where it is compatible and with the dishwasher inlet handled correctly. A jam cleared and the overload reset is $120 to $240, which is worth trying first on a unit that hums rather than clicks. Where the old disposal has been leaking from its body, add $280 to $850 for rebuilding the cabinet floor under it, because particle board that has been wet does not recover.
The work
Kitchen plumbing is a short list of jobs that come up constantly. A disposal that hums and will not turn, or has started leaking from the body rather than a connection. A dishwasher that will not drain, which is usually a missing high loop or air gap rather than a failed pump. A new fridge that needs a water line run to it. A sink that drains slowly, and a trap under the cabinet that somebody has previously fixed with the wrong fittings.
The slow drain is the one worth being careful about. Years of grease narrow a kitchen branch line, and the symptom — water standing in the sink — looks like a disposal problem or a trap problem. Replacing either changes nothing, because the restriction is in the pipe downstream. We work out whether the problem is at the fixture or in the line before quoting a part, which sometimes saves a customer the price of an appliance they did not need.
Disposals themselves are simple and the failures are predictable. A hum with no rotation is a jam, and it clears. A click with no hum is a dead motor or a tripped overload. Water from the bottom of the unit is a failed seal and means replacement, because the body is not serviceable. Where one has been leaking for a while, the cabinet floor underneath has usually gone, and rebuilding that is work for our crew rather than for the plumber. Same for the backsplash tile behind a sink that gets opened up, and the paint after.
Appliance work is quick and predictable. Drain work depends on what is found, which is why diagnosis comes first and is credited against the repair.

What’s included
Written into the estimate, not assumed. If something on your job is not on this list, it gets priced and named before anyone starts.
New units fitted to the existing mount where it is compatible, with the dishwasher inlet connected or plugged correctly and the drain geometry sorted rather than forced.
Working out whether the restriction is at the trap, in the branch or further downstream, before anybody quotes a replacement part. On a kitchen that distinction is usually the whole cost of the job.
Supply, drain and the high loop or air gap that stops dirty sink water siphoning back into the machine. A dishwasher that smells is frequently this and nothing else.
A proper line to an ice maker with an accessible shut-off, rather than a self-piercing saddle valve on a copper run, which is a slow leak waiting for a date.
The under-sink assembly rebuilt to fall with the right fittings, including the air admittance valve where an island sink needs one and does not have one.
Swollen cabinet bases, soft drywall behind the sink, tile that has to come off and go back. Our crew, on the same contract, so the kitchen is finished rather than merely plumbed.

Usually not. A slow kitchen drain is most often grease narrowing the branch line downstream of the trap, and swapping the disposal or the trap changes nothing because the restriction is further along. The tell is whether the sink drains slowly even with the disposal running and the trap clear. We check that before quoting any part, which on a kitchen is the difference between a $240 drain clearing and an unnecessary appliance.
Most often a missing or collapsed high loop in the drain hose, or a blocked air gap. Without one of those, dirty water from the sink side siphons back toward the machine and sits there. It presents as a smell, as standing water, or as dishes that come out dirty, and people replace pumps over it. Checking the drain routing takes a few minutes and fixes it more often than any part does.
Yes, and we will do it with a real shut-off rather than a self-piercing saddle valve clamped onto a copper run. Those saddle valves are the single most common source of slow hidden leaks behind kitchen cabinets, and they are not worth the twenty minutes they save. A proper line runs $260 to $620 depending on how far it has to travel and what has to be opened, and anything we open gets closed and painted by our own crew.
Same crew, same visit
Most plumbing jobs are two or three of these at once, which is why they are priced and scheduled together rather than as separate call-outs.
