Tile Flooring in Frederick & Central MD
Tile and grout are not waterproof. They are the wear surface over the system that is, and a shower only lasts as long as that system was detailed.
Quick answer
Shower walls with waterproofing run $18 to $35 per square foot of installed labour, which puts a typical alcove shower somewhere around $2,800 to $6,500 before the tile itself. It costs more per foot than a floor because of the waterproofing system, the niche and curb detailing, and a far higher cut count. A niche adds $350 to $750 and a tiled bench $450 to $1,100. Moving the drain is plumbing and priced separately.
The work
Every tiled shower that fails, fails in the same place and for the same reason. Water gets through the tile and grout — which it always does, because grout is porous and the tile joints are not a barrier — and then meets whatever is behind. If that is a properly bonded waterproofing system with the corners, seams, curb and niche detailed as part of it, the water runs back to the drain and nothing happens. If it is backer board with a bit of mastic in the corners, the water gets into the wall, and nobody finds out for two years.
So the useful question to ask any contractor quoting a tiled shower is not which tile they recommend. It is what waterproofing system they use, whether sheet or liquid-applied, how they detail inside corners and the curb, and whether they flood test before tiling. We work to a single manufacturer's system rather than mixing components across brands, because a warranty on a mixed assembly is worth nothing and the failures happen exactly at the junctions where two systems meet.
The flood test is the part we would most like clients to insist on, from us or from anybody. Once the waterproofing is complete and before any tile goes on, the shower gets plugged and filled and left, and the level is checked. It costs a day of programme. It is the only moment in the entire build where a defect in the waterproofing can be found and fixed cheaply, and tiling over an untested membrane is choosing not to know.
Maryland tiled showers and wet areas, installed labour plus setting and waterproofing materials. Tile itself is a separate line. Plumbing — moving a drain or valve — is by a licensed plumber and quoted separately.
Ranges, not quotes. Real numbers come from a walkthrough — access, condition, height and finish level move a price more than square footage does. Estimates are free and in writing.

What’s included
Written into the estimate, not assumed. If something on your job is not on this list, it gets priced and named before anyone starts.
Membrane, corners, seam tape, drain flange and bonding mortar all from a single tested system rather than assembled from whatever is on the van. Mixed assemblies fail at the junctions and carry no meaningful warranty, and the junctions are precisely where water finds its way out.
Inside corners, the kerb, the junction with the floor and every pipe or valve penetration treated as part of the waterproofing rather than caulked afterwards. These are where showers leak. A flat wall of membrane is the easy part and almost never the failure point.
Drain plugged, the pan filled, the level marked and left long enough to mean something, with the result shown to you. This is the only point in the build where a waterproofing defect is cheap to fix, and we would rather lose a day than hand over an assembly nobody has tested.
A niche framed, waterproofed and pitched so it drains rather than holding a puddle behind the shampoo; a bench sloped and fully wrapped; a curb waterproofed on all three faces. Each of these is a place where a shortcut is invisible on handover and a leak path in year three.
Layout worked out so the valve, the head and the niche land in sensible relationships to the tile joints, and so the cuts at the kerb and the ceiling are not slivers. Showers carry far more cuts per square foot than a floor, which is why the labour rate is higher.
Flexible sealant rather than grout at inside corners, at the pan-to-wall junction and around the curb, because those joints move and grout in a moving joint cracks. Colour-matched, tooled properly, and renewable — it is the one part of a shower that is meant to be maintained.

With a bonded waterproofing system — either a sheet membrane or a liquid-applied one — over the backer, with the corners, seams, curb and niche all detailed as part of that same system rather than caulked afterwards. Tile and grout are not waterproof; they are the wear surface over the thing that is. We use one manufacturer's components throughout rather than mixing brands, and we flood test the assembly before any tile goes on.
Because the tile was never what was keeping the water out. Grout is porous and the joints are not a barrier, so water passing through is normal and expected — what matters is the membrane behind. A shower leaking with sound-looking tile has almost always failed at an inside corner, the curb, or a pipe penetration, and the only honest fix is to open it up. Regrouting a shower that is leaking behind the tile buys you a few months.
In most homes, yes, but it depends on what is under the floor and that has to be checked before quoting rather than promised. A curbless entry needs the floor recessed or built up so the slope works without a curb to contain the water, and whether that is straightforward depends on the joist direction, the depth available and where the drain sits. The build-up and detailing typically adds $1,400 to $3,800. The bathroom remodelling pages cover the whole-room version of this job.
Same crew, same visit
Most tile flooring jobs are two or three of these at once, which is why they are priced and scheduled together rather than as separate call-outs.
