Painting in Frederick & Central MD
Ceilings painted flat and even, with water stains sealed rather than coated. A ceiling is the one surface in the house lit from the side all day, which is exactly why a rushed one shows.
Quick answer
Around $1.00 to $2.50 per square foot of ceiling, which puts a typical bedroom ceiling at $180 to $420 and a whole floor of around 1,000 square feet at $1,100 to $2,400. Height, texture and whether water stains need sealing first are what move it within that range.
The work
A ceiling is the least forgiving surface in a house to paint, for one reason: it is lit almost entirely by raking light from windows at the side, so every lap mark, every roller stop and every patch that was not primed reads as a shadow. The same wall paint, on the same day, by the same crew, will look flawless vertically and patchy overhead. That is not a product problem, it is a technique problem — a ceiling has to be kept wet edge to wet edge and finished in one pass per plane.
The other thing ceilings do that walls do not is carry history. Old water stains from a roof or a supply line that was fixed years ago will come back through ordinary paint within weeks, because the tannins and minerals in the stain are soluble and ordinary paint is not a barrier. They have to be sealed with a stain-blocking primer first. Painting over a brown ring and hoping is the most common ceiling mistake we get called in to correct.
If the stain is not old history, we will say so before we paint anything. A ceiling mark that is still soft, still spreading or warm to the touch is an active leak, and sealing it just hides the evidence while the problem carries on in the cavity. We would rather find the water first and paint second, even when that means the painting job gets postponed.
Maryland ceiling painting, measured by ceiling area. Stain sealing, height and texture are the three things that move these numbers.
Ranges, not quotes. Real numbers come from a walkthrough — access, condition, height and finish level move a price more than square footage does. Estimates are free and in writing.

What’s included
Written into the estimate, not assumed. If something on your job is not on this list, it gets priced and named before anyone starts.
Each ceiling plane is kept wet edge to wet edge and finished in a single pass. That is the only reliable way to avoid lap marks under side light.
Water marks, smoke and tannin bleed get a stain-blocking primer before the finish. Ordinary paint is not a barrier and the ring comes back through it.
A mark that is soft, spreading or damp is a leak, not a decorating job. We tell you before we paint and we would rather the water got fixed first.
Cracks, nail pops and old patches get properly repaired and primed. We do the drywall as well, so a ceiling repair does not need a second contractor.
Flat paint on a ceiling for a reason — it diffuses light and hides minor variation. Any sheen at all overhead highlights everything you were hoping to lose.
Knockdown and orange-peel ceilings rolled with the right nap so the texture is not flattened, and high or sloped ceilings reached properly rather than stretched for.

Straight answers
Not covered here? Call and ask — you’ll get a real answer, not a “depends on the job”.
Almost always lap marks. A ceiling is lit from the side, so any place where the roller stopped and restarted on paint that had begun to set shows as a band. Fixing it means recoating the whole plane in one continuous pass rather than touching up the patchy areas, which only adds another edge.
Only after sealing them. Water stains carry soluble tannins and minerals that bleed straight through ordinary paint within weeks, which is why a covered-up ring reappears. A stain-blocking primer first, then the finish. And if the stain is still damp we will tell you it is an active leak before we paint anything.
Flat, in almost every room. Flat paint scatters light and forgives small variations in a surface that is lit at the worst possible angle. Satin or eggshell overhead does the opposite and will show every joint, patch and roller line. The exception is a bathroom ceiling, where a washable flat or a very low sheen earns its place.
Same crew, same visit
Most painting jobs are two or three of these at once, which is why they are priced and scheduled together rather than as separate call-outs.
